SERVICE IS GOOD. AMPERSAND

Pretty straight forward ampersand, built up from dots. Helvetica &.
Different colours but not much else to it really.

AMPERSAND SNAKE

randrtees.com

T-shirt from image of snake all wrapped around and coiled into what appears to be an ampersand. I like the idea, but not really my area, so not something that I like well enough to have wished I did it. Too image based, sometimes I think type should just be type. Not all of the time of course.

HUGE TYPE

HUGE TYPE LOOKS SWEAT, another design from turnnocturnal.com.

Huge type doesn't look sweet when it says huge type looks sweet.

AMPERSAND PATTERN

www.turnnocturnal.com

T-shirt design with ampersand in Garamond, italic as the main focus of the t-shirt, but in the background there is also a subtle pattern made up of the Garamond ampersand as well as Helvetica's ampersand. I think the pattern works well and is interesting, not usually used like this. What might work better though would be to see the pattern all over the tee instead of starting at the top the way it does and works down.

I also like how the two ampersands have been used together, contrast in typefaces as they seem completely opposite. Because of this the pattern creates quite an interesting composition.

Based clearly on the structure and craft of the letterform, how you speak language. By writing, printing, drawing and typing. Good clear concept, I think it works well in composition and style. The choice of white on black creates an effective design.

HOUSE INDUSTRIES

Ampersand tee, from Type foundry, House Industries. Using there own letterform as the basis. Very loose, bold and free roaming ampersand, bright from the colour on black. The t-shirts come in men and women sizes.

I like the t-shirt its straight to the point, but want to know why it is there. Just showing their love of the letterform perhaps.

WINE & TWINE

On wineandtwine.com
from Khoi Vinh.

HELL-FUCKING-VETICA

Quite an aggressive design on this persons hatred for Helvetica, whilst using it is ironic. Helvetica and a Blackletter typeface. What I like about this is the contrast between the two typefaces, which creates some sort of equilibrium in the design.

Another design from Khoi Vinh, but this time discussing Cooper Black, but less vulgar than the Helvetica tee. This isn't exactly one of my favourite designs but what I like about it is composition and the choice of solid white on the black. The type big and bold as the typeface was intended when it was designed.

SUPER AMPERSAND

LOREM & IPSUM
from weareloremandipsum.bigcartel.com/

Ampersand based ampersand., built from lots of various ampersands to create a Helvetica styled ampersand. It comprises loads of different typefaces within it. I like the design and it has good quality but I think it seems to create too much of an image for what I am after.

$15 dollars.

AMPERSANDWICH TEE

from simplebits.com

"Delicious typography. A super-soft, Tri-Blend t-shirt in espresso brown from American Apparel, printed with everyone's favorite logogram (set in Knockout). Peanut butter? Mustard? Fluff? Jelly? Either way, we think the ampersand is a ligature for eat and not et."

Fun amspersand typography twist, image based take on the character. With the good pun of 'for eat not et', linking back to exactly what the ampersand is the word et, latin for and.

UGMONK SHOP.

www.ugmonk.com

Ugmonk mission statement as it were, his about page on his website, explaining how it got into it, what he is trying to do and how it went.
Interesting to read as I design t-shirts celebrating the ampersand as he talks of creating a brand centred around his love of typography.

-

"It all started with a simple idea – design fresh high-quality unique items. Just one month after I had graduated college, married my high-school sweetheart, moved to Burlington, VT, and started a full-time design job, I found myself brainstorming about launching my own brand centered around my love for typography and minimal design. I felt like the design culture at the time was really lacking in this area, and apparently this design sensibility connected with many people all around the world. What started as an outlet for my passion and entrepreneurial experiment quickly grew into much more than just selling a few shirts.
Ugmonk didn’t start with a formal business plan and in fact I had very little background in business. Rather than following the “traditional” model of starting a business, I just tried to apply common sense and research to figure things out as they came up. I’ve found that the best way of learning is by doing."

T-SHIRTSS

These t-shirts are certainly typographic and do like some of them a lot, big character, in the face and impacting. There is an ampersand t-shirt as well that was striking as this is what I am focussing on, these pieces however are focussed on the 'and then i woke up', as in discussing a dream which inevitably ends in 'and then i woke up'.

Limited edition packaging and t-shirt.

"
To celebrate Ugmonk's 2nd Anniversary we've created this special Limited Edition Ugmonk Collector's Set.

Ugmonk designed this special limited edition t-shirt to celebrate its second year running, which becomes something worth even more value, limited edition, packaged with extra care and quality becomes so much more. These items show the shop in a very new light, and works really well. Good packaging, that is to the point, solid and special.

OTHER PRODUCTSS

Expanding on the products, pretty good idea to give ground to his designs. Really nice sketchbooks. I like the idea of including a smaller item/ product in with the t-shirt when people buy off of the website.

HELVETICA. A A

AMERICAN APPAREL
Helvetica Alphabet T-shirt

All of the alphabet, in helvetica typeface, with both the capital and lowercase next to each other. American Apparel are now known for this, with the strong impact large letters, black on white.

The t-shirts designed are unisex, and as it has been American Apparel who have done this with the strong brand which has become global these t-shirts are seen as high quality and well respected generally. The t-shirts are popular, even if it may be in more of a 'hipster' scene, the use of helvetica has been expanded and played on even more despite its presence everywhere already.

TYPE T-SHIRTS

Looking at t-shirts specifically designed for type purposes using type, talking about type. All of these t-shirts have been found on Zazzle.com, where people sell they're own products such as t-shirts. Like Etsy but seems a lot more cheap/ commercial compared to what Etsy has to offer and how it brands itself.

These t-shirts range from some that are quite appropriate, not too overbearing while there are plenty that just come across cheap and tacky but could easily be designed to be gimicky.

With my t-shirts I want to get away from my t-shirts having the standard cheap idea of 'type t-shirts' but would rather create something that holds a lot more quality, branded and well designed.

Next, look at the higher quality standard of t-shirts.
