FORM, FUNCTION AND PRODUCTION

BACCHUS RASPBERRY BEER

This weeks Studio session included bringing in one piece of each of the following: Packaging, Promtotion and a Publication. From this we worked in groups in order to analyse the packaging and print of Baccus Raspberry Beer. In the group was Will Duffy, Sam, Pav and myself and here is a photo of the bottle packaged.

CONTENT & CATEGORISATION

-The product is a Belgian raspberry flavoured beer, and it is immediately clear that the purple/wine colour represents this and is the main colour used.
-The typeface has drawn off connotations to that of a Medieval style, quite Abbey and Trappist in its style as it is very traditional and historic, which of course works well with Belgium history.
-The design it itself appears to be quite Post Modern in the way that a historical side can be seen within the design but the design itself has been placed in a modern way.
-This can also be seen through the use of the stylised centre image of the man, which appears almost to have quite a 30's or 50's design in it.
-The market for the product is quite niche in order to keep it traditional, in the same way how it appears to be traditional in its design it keeps the market quite niche.
-The imagery of the raspberry itself is of course completely relevant and has placed simply to communicate the product.
-The product itself is multilingual, and holds three different languages which can prove the product to hold a wider market.

FORM & FORMAT

-Product packaging, which we can see is wrapping for the bottle, which creates the product itself to be interactive. It's physical, it becomes an experience.
-The wrapping of the product is without doubt quite decorative, and higher end of a product as opposed to a standard bottle with a sticker which we see as the norm.
-How it has been packaged seems quite a traditional style of packaging, once again, as opposed to a sticker, which creates much more of a commercial feel to it, this wrapping is more primitive.
-Makes the packaging easy to print due to it s format, and design.
-Size, 33.5 x 39.5cm

PRODUCT & RANGE

-There is at least two in the range of Bacchus' flavoured beers, the other being Cherry.
-Cherry design of packaging is exactly the same design with the obviously replaced items, such as the imagery, the writing, and the colour is now bright red, keeping it completely in theme within the range.
-See that the product branding has stretched over more products including beer mats and glasses.
-This product has been a part of unifying the brand, to create a solid product.
MEDIA & PROCESS

-There are six colours that have been used within this design, even though for example the yellow is only used the tiniest bit on the logo.
-A six colour spot print, as the print shows completely solid, flat colours with no sign of other colours mixing.
-The ink of the paper is printed quite thick, and probably printed using Lithography or Flexography.
-The print would have more than likely have been web offset, so would have been on a sheet roll for continuous print production as opposed to sheet fed, to make it cheaper and more efficient for high production printing.
-After the continuous print, each individual sheet would be cut to size from the machine and would be ready to be used for packaging.
-Stock of the paper is like heavy weight tissue paper, similar to that used as old penny sweet bags.

AUDIENCE & INTERACTION

-As soon as the product is bought in order to be drank by the appropriate user, the audience, it first needs to be unwrapped, this is an immediate link between the product and the user, due to interaction.
-It is  meant to be seen in this classy niche market of people who drink interesting beer, whether its interesting for its flavour, heritage, design.
-This niche market links back again with how it is opened, traditional and primitive.
-For a general look at a market for people drinking beer, a higher end of beer has been produced onto the market, stemming directly from the beer and the design to communicate the history and style of the beer.
-By being able to unwrap the product, the beer has a quality to it that could be seen perfectly to be given as a gift.

FORM & FUNCTION

Function
-To brand the product, and has been designed in order to connote everything intended about the beer, this includes the information from the content as well as the design to show how the beer aims to be portrayed. The function has been to package a bottle and everything has been put into place so well to work all roles intended.

Form
-The form has been that it does package a bottle, and fits perfectly fine into the market as a higher end beer. It has been designed to be a traditional beer and has succeeded.

SCALE & CONTEXT

-The scale of the packaging has obviously been designed to fit perfectly around the form of the bottle.
-Entirely representative of the product.
-The context of the product is simply to be placed within the shop, similar to the products it is in competition with but aimed to be better, to be different.
